MSA Spotlight
Kevin Springer - VP of MSA Operations

Hello...My name is Kevin Springer and I am the Vice President in charge of Operations for McKinney Soccer Association.  In my normal life, I am the Director of Risk Management at a top 30 financial agency which is Higginbotham & Associates...

When I do concentrate on volunteer activities, I have focused and I have been associated with MSA as a coach or in some other responsibility on the board since 2001. This is when my daughter began playing at the age of 4...I grew up in West Texas so to say the least, soccer was not on my radar except for the occasional game on TV when the USA tried their experiment with professional soccer back in the 70’s...I was fascinated by the ball skills but like most Americans, soccer was not “our” sport and so the interest was minimal. My interest lied with football and baseball...

Fast forward many years to when my daughter was born and once she began showing some interest in kicking a ball around, we joined an MSA team when age eligible and she progressed to the point of playing for a club and participating in the Lake Highlands Girls Classic League in both Division II and Division III.  Without access to a recreational league like MSA, all the rest would not be possible. Whether playing for fun or to progress to a higher level of play, MSA provides the opportunity and environment to get to know and love the game of soccer like we have over the last 9 plus years...

I even have a professional team in the English Premier League that I follow closely and that is Arsenal...Boy, would they be surprised that a kid that grew up in West Texas would be an ardent fan...Needless to say, I am thankful I stepped up to coach when I did not only for the appreciation of the “beautiful game” but to work closely with young kids, including my daughter.  I believe our relationship today is as strong as it is by our interaction in sports, especially soccer. MSA has always fostered that belief in that it is “all about the kids” and is why I have volunteered so much time over the last 9 years with this association.

Currently, MSA is led by many individuals but I would like to recognize one...That is John Long...I have known John for all my years with MSA and let me tell you, there is not a finer leader of a volunteer organization than he is... We are all fortunate to be associated with MSA and without John, I as well as many others would not have the appreciation for the game as well as an efficiently run organization that we can entrust our children to...

My thanks to everyone involved with MSA for the last 9 years...I look forward to seeing you all “on the pitch”...

“Quote from John Long (president)” Kevin has always been a great guy to have in meetings because he will always provide input when needed.  Sometimes it’s not what everyone wants to hear but he makes sure everything is out on the table so we can make informed decisions as a board.  He has worn many hats on the board including league director, Appeals and Discipline Chair and currently VP of Operations.  Kevin is not the type to sit around and simply throw out suggestions on how to improve things without getting involved.  He joined the board because he realized he could help improve the organization in areas that he saw needed help.  He most recently spearheaded the relocation of the MSA office and we now have a very comfortable lease agreement that we have locked in for 5 years.  Kevin also insures that the association has the proper insurance coverage and competitive contracts with any vendors.  He is a big part of MSA’s success over the last 10 years.

Heads Up! US Youth Soccer and CDC Team Up

 to Help Keep Young Athletes Safe from

Concussion

USYouthSoccer.org Health and Safety Resource Center – Concussion Information

FRISCO, Texas (March 31, 2011) – US Youth Soccer and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are proud to be teaming up to help protect participants of all youth sports who may be at risk of concussion. The campaign, is an expansion of the “Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports,” and will help get concussion information into the hands of coaches, parents, and school and health care professionals who are on the front-line to help identify and respond appropriately to concussions among young athletes.

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Concussions can have long-term impacts on young athletes, such as on their health, memory, and learning.

“Education is a core element to the goals of US Youth Soccer and furthering the awareness and steps to minimize potential serious injuries to our youth athletes is paramount,” said John Sutter, president of US Youth Soccer. “Concussions are serious and materials that are now available will get the right information about how to identify and manage a concussion directly into the hands of the people that need it the most – our youth sports coaches, parents and the athletes themselves.”

“Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports,” is designed to help coaches, parents, and fellow athletes recognize the symptoms of a concussion and provides actions that need to be taken when an athlete is showing signs of a concussion. Campaign materials are available at no cost and include:

  • An online training for coaches;
  • A fact sheet for coaches;
  • A fact sheet for athletes;
  • A fact sheet for parents;
  • A magnet with concussion facts for coaches and parents;
  • A poster with concussion facts for coaches and sports administrators; and
  • A quiz for coaches, athletes, and parents.

Since youth sports administrators play a vital role in sharing educational materials with their coaches, the campaign encourages youth sports program administrators to order and distribute the materials to the coaches in their programs at the beginning of the sports season.

Youth sport administrators and coaches are encouraged to order as many materials as needed and/or download extra copies of the concussion fact sheets. CDC’s aim is to get the information into the hands – and heads – of all coaches, parents and athletes. Take the online training or order or download the “Heads Up” materials free-of-charge at www.cdc.gov/Concussion.

Additional copies of the fact sheets for athletes and parents can be downloaded or ordered, in English or Spanish, at: www.cdc.gov/ConcussionInYouthSports.

For more information about concussions, traumatic brain injury, or injury in general, visit USYouthSoccer.org Health and Safety Resource Center or the CDC Injury Center’s website at www.cdc.gov/Concussion.
